Demographic and Psychographic Profiling

Marketing a product involves a certain demographics, which refers to factors such as age, location, ethnicity and social status. Therefore it is important for us to research into our target audience. Also if we were to advertise the thriller we will be able to determine when and where advertising should be placed so as to achieve maximum results.
Psychographics goes beyond demographics and examines people’s life style, attitude and behaviour for example. This will help us understand our current target audience and their needs.
After conducting quite a lot of audience research, and also having a general idea of what our target audience would be like anyway, we have decided to do a demographic and psychographic profile of our target audience. There will obviously be a much wider demographic, but this is who we are aiming our thriller at.
Demographic Profile:
  • Our target audience is in the age range 15-25.The reason for this age band is that from out research into thrillers most of them are ratted 15 or 18 therefore involving more of the younger generation.
  • Our audience will be of both sex (we are using a child actor who is a young girl, female audience may be able to relate to her more, but also as she is young the whole audience can get emotion involved in the thriller as she could resemble a cousin or little sister or someone’s daughter)
  • They will be semi-intelligent, (by, semi-intelligent we mean that they can think for themselves, making assumptions of what is happening in the film and why or what might happen next)
  • Many of them will have a part-time or full-time job or still in education, so they will have reasonable spending power in their own right, rather than relying on family members for income. So that they can purchase the thriller.
  • They are up-to-date with modern technologies, for example, many either want or own a phone such as a BlackBerry or an iPhone, and they spend a reasonable amount of time on social networking sites such as Facebook.
Psychographic Profile:
  • They will consider themselves to be independent, young people, who enjoy going out and socialising two or three times a week with friends, maybe to bars.
  • They will have a large group of friends, some closer than others, and will see their friends as a sort of second family, going out with them, or seeing them, most nights.
  • Fun outgoing people who like the thrill of something new.
  • They like to keep up with both the news and celebrity gossip, and have opinions on most topics and current issues - they can hold their own in a conversation about pretty much anything.
  • They enjoy films, and often visit the cinema, and whilst they enjoy some blockbuster films, such as 'Taken', or 'Orphan', they tend to prefer scary films and dramas.
How we are targeting our audience with our video:
  • By using a child as the actor, emotionally involving the audience
  • The creeping setting of a park with a river surrounded by trees, this will appeal to the target audience as it will remind them of films such as Omen as the boy is sitting on a swing in the woods also he is a child to.
  • The main character has black hair and in pale. From our research we have found that an actor with black hair reveals that a film is a thriller.
