Evaluation 1 - In what ways does your media project use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The Title of the film

Our group were originally thinking of one word for our thriller title as we thought it would be very effective and to the point.  For example "Forgotten" etc. However once creating our storyline we came up with the idea of "Pocket full O' poses" for our thriller for our thriller is based around the idea of a young girl who had been murdered. Therefore bringing the title of the film into place being a children’s song which reflects the age of the young girl.

Setting/location

The opening of our thriller is set inside a graveyard in Brentwood. This was used to create an enigma and to establish the genre of our thriller. We started our thriller with shots of Kayleigh staring at a grave and used close up shots to establish her distraught feelings towards the situation. The grave is not shown from the front leaving the audience wondering who has died but is later known after the appearances of Amy.

Costumes and props

Props play an important part of our thriller and really add to the characters costumes to establish who they are. Amy playing the part of a young girl wears a red ribbon in her hair signifying danger; she also carries a small brown teddy bear revealing her age group.

Camera Work and Editing

Whilst filming our thriller we used a range of shots to show characters emotions and so the audience could feel as if they are part of the thriller. Filming Kayleigh from across the river and high angles allowed us to give across the feeling of being watched and left a creepy effect this seemed to be really effective. Editing we used in some takes an effect called “old film” this allowed the parts of Amy to be seen differently to the rest of the film creating the effect of past and present life.

Title and font style

The font of our thriller is quite bold and to the point unlike our title, “Pocket full O’ poses” has a deeper meaning and reflects the young girls character. As the title being a young nursery rhyme “ring a ring of roses” it identifies the young girl’s age group. We did a voice over during filming of the song being sung but in a creepy way as if from the young girl. This adds to the thriller of the film and gives it a scary edge.

Story and how the opening sets it up:

The opening for our thriller starts down into the forest with Kayleigh down by the river picking up the ribbon from the water, the camera is from the opposite side and gets the full effect of the atmosphere and the background of which Kayleigh is in. The enigma of this gives the audience a sense of wanting to know how the story progresses as the beginning is the same shot as one linked to the end and plays a key role into the story of the thriller with one of the main props being the red ribbon symbolising the girl.
Genre and how the opening sets it up:

The genre fits a thriller really well as we based ours on the thriller of the Orphan film. The story is slightly different however the genre is spot on, leaving the audience wanting to know what happens in the film and causing suspense. Some of the shots have been speeded up to create tension before the finale of the end of our opening, these are shots of Kayleigh running to find Amy and Amy wandering in the effect of old film to suggest there is something unusual occurring. One convention of our thriller would be the horror side, we wanted to create an effect where the viewing would be somewhat shocking and creepy to watch, therefore the end scene where Amy is playing down the river covered in blood was created. The location of the film also adds to the genre being deep into the woods by a fast flowing river giving connotations of seclusion and danger. Luckily enough it was raining during filming adding to the pathetic fallacy of the drama of the plot.
