Thriller is a type of genre of television or litrature film that uses tension, suspence, and excitement as the main elemements of the film.
- Conspiracy thriller: This is where the hero or heroine confronts a large, powerful group of enemies whose true extent only he/she recognizes. Examples : Absolute Power, Capricorn One, and JFK.
- Crime thriller: This Genre is a mix of both crime films and thrillers that gives a suspenseful look of a successful or failed crime or crimes. Crime thrillers usually highlight action over psychological aspects. Central topics of these films will involve murderers and serial killers, robberies, chases, shootouts. Some examples of crime thrillers involving murderers include, seven and silence of the lambs.
- Erotic thrillers: This consists of erotica thriller. It has become more popular since the 1980’s because of the rise of VCR’s rising in the market. The genre includes such films as Basic Instinct, Chloe, In the Cut and Lust & Caution.
- Legal thrillers: A legal thriller is where the lawyer is usually the hero heroine and they confront enemies outside and in the courtroom and are also in danger of not only jeopardizing there cases but losing their lives. The Runaway Jury by John Grisham is a well-known example of the type. Other examples include The Client, Fracture, A Time to Kill, Primal Fear, A Few Good Men, Presumed Innocent and The Juror.
- Mystery thrillers: These are suspense films where the characters are to solve their own mystery. Examples include Flight plan, Mind hunters, The Number 23, Unforgettable & Shutter Island.
- Psychological thrillers: This is where the relationship between the two characters is mental and emotional rather than physical.
- Rape and Revenge: This focuses more on the thriller elements such as suspense, tension, some action and fast-pacing rather than scares and the supernatural. Some famous rape and revenge films are The Last House on the Left, Irreversible.
