Research On Previous Thillers

'The Third Man'
(1949 - Carol Reed)

We looked at the begining of 'the third man' and within a few seconds we see an example of composition where there are four mean in a car and the shot is close to the subject of the two men in front but keeping enough in the background to reflect the importance of the two mean in the back and part of the surroundings. The mise-en-scene of their uniforms and costume in the film places them in the ideal context for the film. The sound bridge which then introduces the mean running up the stairs in which these stairs give us an indication of wealth as the stair case is a very large, metal and prosperous peice of set. Then a low angle, tilted shot is shown in which the composition of the staircase and door, again, reflects affluent character in the next shot. Up beat music is played as soon as the character walks into frame which links the music to the personality of the character, this then gives the audience an insight into him in which they can sympathise with when faced with the antagonist.

In our group i think it would be useful to show a few shots of the victim so that like in 'the third man' the audience can relate to the character which then enables them to sympathise with this person and gain more interest into the antagonist's actions towards the victim. In 'the third man' they have been successful in doing this and we can look further into this thriller to provide inspiration for our own.
